Flawless editing for the perfectionist in you

Let's shed some light.

Professional Editing and Proofreading for Your Business

The lighthouse you see represents the kind of clarity I seek to bring to your writing.

Common concerns:

  • I'm struggling to articulate exactly what I need.

  • I have cost concerns.

  • I'm not sure I can find the right editor.

  • I need quick edits but worry about sacrificing quality.

  • I have feedback anxiety.

  • I have technical formatting issues.

Common Pitfalls Clients Face

Your writing represents you. Whether it's a manuscript, proposal, or website copy, how it's read determines how it's remembered. But even skilled writers encounter pitfalls that can weaken their impact:

  • Surface-Level Proofreading vs. True Editing: Spellcheck catches typos, but does it refine your tone and structure? Professional editing goes beyond error correction, ensuring clarity and flow.

  • Overlooking Credibility Risks: Grammar slip-ups, inconsistent formatting, and vague wording can undermine your authority. A polished document enhances your reputation.

  • Rushed Revisions & Missing Nuances: When self-editing under deadline pressure, it's easy to skim over awkward phrasing or unnoticed repetition. A fresh editorial eye preserves intentionality.

  • Genre-Specific Challenges: Romance novels require emotional resonance. Business documents need persuasion. Every writing style benefits from tailored editing to fit audience expectations.

  • AI Use: I don't use AI when my clients are paying for human expertise. It takes longer, and it costs more. That's one way to recognize quality work. The other way to recognize quality is when you see the work -- the perfection lets your readers focus on your message.

An Editor with Unique Experience

My early training shaped everything

My foundation in editorial precision began early—under one of the most rigorous academic systems for writing refinement. Starting in eighth grade, I was trained in a two-year grammar-intensive program designed for absolute accuracy. By sophomore year, the system was relentless: each grammar or spelling mistake on our weekly in-class essays meant an automatic letter-grade deduction. This system wasn’t just a challenge; it was an immersive training ground. I got a C on my first essay, then straight As for three years on this weekly exercise.

By the time I completed senior year, flawless writing wasn’t just expected; it was ingrained. That discipline shaped my editorial approach, ensuring that no detail is overlooked and no refinement is too small. Today, I bring that same level of precision to my clients’ work, ensuring that every document is polished to perfection.

I earned a Master's degree at Purdue and a Doctorate in Organizational Communication (everything about management except the finance) at a top program, the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. I've studied all facets of management, leadership, and organizations and have become deeply experienced in academic writing and editing, as well as coaching graduate students.

I have decades of work in multiple environments - technical writing for Dow Chemical, intelligence writing for NSA, senior executive support writing, and owning my own editing business. So I excel at a wide variety of voices, from technical to executive, and a wide variety of voices and styles.

I have always been a voracious reader across many genres. My favorites are science fiction, fantasy, mysteries (especially cozy mysteries), fiction, and self-help. I've read many, many romances with a wide variety of characters and tones. I've read so many classic authors it's hard to begin to chose a favorite. I know good writing from experience and by producing it.

I habitually find errors in everything I read. Those errors make me sad because they are unnecessary. That's why I offer ...

With customized editing solutions across multiple writing categories, I elevate your work so it leaves a lasting impression.

I don’t promise perfection. No editor should.

But for short-form proofreading, I aim for no more than three uncorrected errors. That’s not a gimmick. It’s a reflection of how seriously I take clarity.

On every manuscript, I bring the same intention, discipline, and respect. I slow down when it matters, track every change, and treat your work like it’s headed straight to publication.

My tools? Experience, a sharp eye, and the humility to reread. Twice or more.

If you value that kind of editorial care, let’s talk.

My Editing Standard

What Clients Say

Clear writing. Credible outcomes. Calm, expert support.

I just read my final draft out loud and thought, God damn, this is good. I’m so proud of what we pulled together. This wasn’t just another memo—it was personal, high-stakes, and written under serious pressure. I couldn’t have done it alone, and I didn’t have to. Susan showed up with calm, clarity, and exactly the kind of help I didn’t even know I needed. She made it possible for me to tell the truth, clearly and on my own terms.

I am so happy that I hired Susan. She gives very thorough feedback and had great suggestions. She clearly knows her craft, and I feel like my manuscript will be so much better now. Just like me, she is starting out on Upwork, but she is a fantastic editor and beta reader. I will be hiring Susan again with the next step of my book. Thank you, Susan!
